deer, 2024-25

This years theme to bare the longest of Maine winters for myself is Deer. Until you live in an area of the country where wilderness and hunting are a common practice, it's fairly difficult to understand why anyone would want to take up hunting, let alone for us city dwellers, kill Bambi. But, with some thoughtful conversations, research, and newspaper articles, I've learned that hunting is much more than a Disney story. Hunting is a highly skilled sport, it is used to control overpopulation and provides food for many families in some communities; it's also a necessary means for the natural ecosystem of rural areas. Of course, like anything, it has those who abuse the privilege, which gives way to anti-hunting, and gun activists, but it's probably safe to say there are more people that respect the sport than take it for granted.

The image to the left is a sketch I started, scanned and stylized in Photoshop. The final painting won't look like this version, but it gives me a rough idea of how I'd like it to look.
Hopefully, I'll get to finishing this one during the rainy season, and before it's summer.
